There is a unique bond between horses and people which can be particularly meaningful to children with disabilities. Riding programs provide a relaxing, non-academic environment in which children can interact with adults and peers as well as their horse.
Research has shown that therapeutic riding programs offer physical, psychological, social and educational benefits to special students. The riders themselves show us the benefits through their smiles, determination and their sense of accomplishment.
The Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center has been the site of a therapeutic riding program for ten years. The BTRC currently offers programs for mentally and emotionally impaired, learning disabled and developmentally challenged children ages 6 to 16.
Programs are designed and taught by Libby McNabb, an instructor registered with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, Inc. (NARHA) and with Special Olympics. Classes are limited to four students to enforce a safe and fun experience. Each class is designed to achieve specific goals that meet the requirements of the group and/or individual.
Good lesson horses are the key to any successful riding program. Ours have been carefully selected for their manners and suitability. The facility stables more than twenty lesson horses. Some are used for beginners and others are used by more experienced riders for showing and jumping.
Volunteers are always needed and are an invaluable part of the program. They can assist with horse care and handling or can serve as a friend and sidewalker. |
